The Signs of Tooth Abscess

A tooth abscess is a painful infection that occurs at the root of a tooth or between the tooth and the gum. It begins when bacteria enters the tooth, usually through an untreated cavity, crack, or chip. If left untreated, a tooth abscess can spread the infection to other parts of the body and lead to more concerning health complications. Recognizing the signs of a tooth abscess early can help you seek treatment before more serious conditions develop.

Severe Toothache

One of the most common signs of a tooth abscess is a persistent, throbbing toothache that can radiate to your jawbone, neck, or ear. The pain may worsen when you lie down or apply pressure to the affected tooth.

High Temperature Sensitivity

If your tooth suddenly becomes extremely sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks, it could be a sign that an infection has reached the nerves inside your tooth.

Swollen Gums or Face

Swelling around the affected tooth, gums, or even the face is another sign of a tooth abscess. The swelling may be accompanied by redness and tenderness.

Bad Taste in Your Mouth or Foul Breath

If pus is draining from the abscess, you may notice a bad taste in your mouth or experience bad breath. This is a potential indication that the infection is present and should be treated immediately.

Fever

In more severe cases, an abscess may cause a fever as your body fights off the infection.

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your dentist immediately. At Manhattan Dental Care Studio, we offer emergency dental services to diagnose and treat tooth abscesses promptly. Treatment typically involves draining the abscess to remove the infection, and in some cases, a root canal or extraction may be necessary.

Preventing Tooth Abscesses

The best way to prevent a tooth abscess is by practicing good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups. Catching cavities and cracks early can stop infections before they begin.

If you suspect you have a tooth abscess, schedule an appointment at Manhattan Dental Care Studio today to keep your smile and health protected.
