Afraid of the Dentist?
You’re Not Alone
Dental anxiety is extremely common and we see patients every day who feel uneasy about treatment. Some common dental fears include:
Pain

Many people assume that dental treatment, particularly more complex procedures, will be painful or involve uncomfortable needles. While a number of advances have made pain-free dentistry and injections possible, some patients remember a time when treatment was much less pleasant.

Loss of Control

Sitting still in a dentist’s chair with your mouth open, unable to see exactly what’s going on may trigger feelings of helplessness. When you believe you have no control, anxiety sets in.

A Repeat of a Negative Experience

Patients who have had painful procedures at the hands of another dentist tend to be reluctant to seek out treatment again.

Interference with Breathing

There is a biological need to keep the airways open and it’s possible that the fight or flight response can kick in when someone feels as if their breathing will be obstructed by a dentist’s hand or an instrument in their mouth.

Embarrassment

When patients are insecure about the appearance or health of their teeth and gums, having someone inches away from their face examining their mouth can me them feel embarrassed or anxious.

Subconscious Anxiety

Studies have found a strong positive connection between dental fear in parents and children. If mom or dad had dental anxiety, it’s quite possible it was passed on to you and you may not even realize it.

Nitrous Oxide

Sometimes called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe, mild and effective way to ensure you’re comfortable during treatment. You’ll be awake and maintain your natural reflexes, yet you’ll feel at ease, relaxed and maybe even a little euphoric. We give patients the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a breathing mask and can adjust the concentration. It wears off quickly once we stop the flow and you can resume normal activities the same day.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation involves administering medication to enable you to be completely relaxed. Depending on the dosage, sedation can be minimal to moderate. You’ll remain conscious, however, you’ll probably feel drowsy and may even fall asleep or not remember much of the procedure. Conscious sedation takes a bit longer to wear off than nitrous oxide and you’ll need to enlist someone to drive you home from your appointment.
